EU seeks closer Vietnam ties for critical minerals
The European Union is exploring ways to increase critical mineral supplies from Vietnam as part of efforts to reduce dependence on China.
Internal EU documents dated June 2026 and first reported by Reuters on October 14 identify Vietnam's tungsten, rare earths, antimony, bismuth and bauxite resources as potential strategic alternatives. The documents recommend financial support for mining and processing capacity. Vietnamese leader To Lam is expected to visit Brussels for discussions on October 22, although the visit has not been officially announced.
The initiative could support Europe's efforts to diversify supply chains for materials used in defence, electronics and advanced manufacturing. Developing Vietnam's mineral resources may create a longer-term alternative to China's dominant position in critical raw materials. However, financing arrangements, processing capacity and commercial commitments remain uncertain.
