US says goodbye to the penny
The US Congress has passed legislation to officially end production of the one-cent coin after more than 230 years.
The measure, which also cleared the Senate, has been sent to US President Donald Trump for his signature. If approved by Trump, production of the one-cent coin in the United States will officially come to an end.
The US Mint had already stopped producing pennies for circulation in November 2025. One of the main reasons behind the decision was the sharp rise in production costs. The cost of producing a single penny increased from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents over the past decade, while ending production entirely is expected to save approximately $56 million annually.
