US signals F-35 deal with Türkiye

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump wants F-35 fighter jets delivered to Türkiye, but existing legal restrictions are preventing the sale.

Speaking to Kathimerini newspaper in Athens, Greece, Rubio emphasized that Türkiye is a NATO ally and has already made payments under the F-35 program. He said two aircraft paid for by Türkiye are ready for delivery, but restrictions imposed by Congress and the National Defense Authorization Act currently prevent the transaction. Rubio identified Türkiye’s purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems as the main unresolved obstacle.

Rubio said Turkish officials have been informed of the legal barriers and that both sides continue exploring potential solutions. Highlighting cooperation between the US and Türkiye in defense and regional security, he stressed the importance of bilateral relations. Addressing questions about possible tensions between Türkiye and Greece in the Aegean and Cyprus, Rubio said a conflict between two NATO allies would be unacceptable. His remarks indicated that Washington remains politically open to an F-35 sale, but deliveries cannot proceed unless the legal restrictions linked to the S-400 issue are resolved.
