BBVA warns of risks in Turkish corporate bonds
BBVA highlighted selling pressure in Turkish corporate bonds, stating that a market recovery would require greater clarity on existing uncertainties.
In an analysis prepared by Tufan Cömert, BBVA's Global Markets Strategy Director, the bank noted that Vestel Elektronik's debt restructuring proposal had heightened investors' perception of risk. The development has also intensified concerns about bonds issued by other highly leveraged Turkish companies.
BBVA stated that the Turkish investment fund crisis, elevated fuel costs, and weakness in the aviation sector amid geopolitical developments have weighed on the corporate bond market. While the bank considers the risk of a broader sector-wide problem limited, it noted that the sell-off could create investment opportunities in the coming period. However, BBVA indicated that it does not plan to significantly increase its exposure to Turkish corporate bonds until there is greater clarity regarding Vestel's debt restructuring process, the scope of investment fund investigations, and the direction of global interest rates.
