Billions frozen following Binance cyberattack

Following a reported $6.3 billion cyberattack targeting Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have frozen billions of dollars in assets.

Tether blocked the movement of approximately $1.57 billion in assets linked to the attack, while Circle announced that it had frozen an additional $800 million. Together, the two companies have frozen approximately $2.37 billion. The attack, reportedly carried out within about 20 minutes, may have originated from a compromised computer belonging to a Binance employee.

Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals following the attack and announced that any user losses would be covered using company funds. Blockchain analytics firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis suggested that North Korea-linked groups may have been responsible, although the attackers' identities have not been confirmed. In response to the incident, Coinbase and Kraken began reviewing their security measures, while calls for real-time threat intelligence sharing and coordinated security mechanisms across the cryptocurrency industry have intensified.
