Binance faces $6.3 billion security crisis
Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, announced on October 30, 2026, that it was investigating a major security breach potentially affecting approximately $6.3 billion in assets.
According to the company's preliminary findings, a software operations engineer's computer may have been compromised, potentially allowing an attacker to carry out unauthorized withdrawals. Binance stated that approximately $3 billion in assets had been frozen on the blockchain, while deposits and withdrawals were temporarily suspended for security checks. The company maintained that user funds remained safe.
The security incident triggered a sharp sell-off across cryptocurrency markets, pushing Bitcoin below $79,000. Binance is working with stablecoin issuers, including Tether and Circle, to prevent suspicious assets from being transferred. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao described the incident as appearing to be a cyberattack, while the company's management pledged to cover potential losses. However, it has not been confirmed that the entire $6.3 billion was stolen. The final financial impact and full scope of the attack will become clearer as investigations continue.
