BIST 100 hits 16-month low in dollar terms
As selling pressure intensified on Borsa Istanbul, the BIST 100 index fell to its lowest level in US dollar terms since June 2025.
Following a warning from global index provider MSCI regarding Türkiye, the index's daily losses reached 3%, with the dollar-denominated index testing the 235 level. The BIST 100 had previously climbed as high as 333 in dollar terms in May.
The sell-off was driven in part by MSCI's decision to freeze certain changes to its Türkiye indexes until further notice. The index provider cited concerns over potentially coordinated trading activities through investment funds and warned that Türkiye's emerging market classification could be reassessed if sufficient improvements are not achieved by June 2027. Although Türkiye's current classification remains unchanged, the announcement weighed on foreign investors' expectations for Turkish equities.
