BPCE buys a 7% stake in Sabadell

French banking group Groupe BPCE acquired a 7% stake in Spain's Banco Sabadell and said it plans to be a long-term shareholder.

The stake is worth about €1.2 billion at current market prices, while BPCE does not plan to raise its holding above 9.9% and is seeking representation on Sabadell's board.

The two banks will explore cooperation in corporate and investment banking and consumer credit, aiming to conclude discussions in early 2027.

Sabadell shares rose 2.3% following the news, while analysts viewed the investment as a move that strengthens the bank's position against potential future consolidation attempts.
