Citadel sees potential for year-end rally in U.S. stocks
Citadel Securities believes that conditions are emerging that could support gains in U.S. equity markets toward the end of the year.
According to the firm, recovering investor risk appetite, market positioning, and seasonal trends are increasing the likelihood of a year-end rally on Wall Street. The performance of major technology companies and expectations surrounding Federal Reserve (Fed) monetary policy remain particularly important in determining market direction.
Citadel Securities strategist Scott Rubner stated that reduced political uncertainty following the U.S. midterm elections and an acceleration in corporate share buybacks could support equity markets. According to the firm's data, retail investors were net buyers for 22 consecutive trading sessions beginning October 5, purchasing approximately $33 billion worth of stocks. Continued buying despite a 2% decline in the S&P 500 over the same period indicated that investor demand remained strong. Additionally, newly announced corporate share repurchase programs reached a combined value of $1.5 trillion.
