Türkiye considers new pension increases
Following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's announcement regarding potential legislation for retirees, pension increases and additional financial support measures have returned to the agenda.
The proposed changes could affect approximately 17.1 million retirees, with options under consideration including flat-rate pension increases, pension adjustments based on contribution histories, and social assistance for low-income pensioners. Currently, around 4 million people receive the minimum monthly pension of TL 23,552. However, it remains unclear whether the new measures would apply only to minimum pension recipients or cover a broader group of retirees.
Among the options being evaluated as part of the 2027 budget are equal additional increases to pension payments, revisions addressing differences in social security contributions, and rent and utility bill assistance for low-income retirees. Additional support through the Income-Supplementing Family Support System (GETAD) is also under consideration. The scope of the proposed measures is expected to become clearer by the end of the year, although no final official decision has been made regarding flat-rate pension increases or other financial assistance programs.
