Fed signals gradual interest rate hikes
Federal Reserve (Fed) officials indicated that interest rate increases should continue gradually as inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin emphasized in their November 5 remarks that the fight against inflation is not yet over. Hammack expressed support for smaller, regular interest rate increases to achieve price stability without triggering a sharp slowdown in economic activity.
The Fed kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%–4.00% during its October meeting. The officials' comments have kept expectations of another rate hike in December in focus, while markets continue to monitor signals from economic data. Labor market resilience, wage growth, and the impact of energy costs on inflation remain among the key factors expected to shape the future direction of monetary policy.
