Fed warns of rising inflation pressures
The Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book report revealed that rising energy costs are intensifying inflationary pressures across the US economy.
According to the report, price increases remained strong or accelerated in six of the Fed's 12 districts. Businesses reported that elevated diesel prices, commodity costs, tariffs, and insurance expenses were contributing to inflation. Higher fuel costs were also being passed through supply chains in the form of increased transportation charges.
The report indicated that economic activity expanded modestly across most of the United States, while employment levels remained broadly unchanged. Wage increases were reported in 11 Federal Reserve districts, with some regions noting that inflation was adding to wage pressures. Following higher-than-expected consumer inflation in September, market expectations shifted toward the Fed keeping interest rates unchanged at its October 27–28 meeting, with a potential additional rate hike in December.
