South African inflation misses forecasts
South Africa's annual consumer inflation increased to 4.5% in September, below economists' expectations of 4.7%.
Official statistics released on October 21 showed that inflation accelerated slightly from 4.4% in August. Consumer prices increased 0.4% month-on-month.
The smaller-than-expected increase suggests that inflation pressures may be less severe than anticipated, potentially easing concerns at the South African Reserve Bank.
However, the country's dependence on imported fuel leaves it exposed to elevated global oil prices resulting from the Middle East conflict. The inflation surprise could reduce pressure for additional monetary tightening, although energy costs remain an important risk.
