South Africa faces renewed grey-list risk
Business Leadership South Africa warned on October 28 that the country faces a significant risk of returning to the Financial Action Task Force's grey list.
South Africa was removed from the list in October 2025. Its latest assessment showed the anti-corruption reform score unchanged at 51.2, while the overall reform completion score improved from 71.3 to 72.5.
A return to enhanced monitoring could increase banking compliance costs, complicate cross-border payments and discourage foreign investment. The FATF's new evaluation process is expected to include a peer review in the first quarter of 2027. However, no decision has been made to place South Africa back on the grey list.
