IMF warns of three major financial risks

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted three major threats to the global economy in its October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report.

The institution warned that sharp market corrections in the artificial intelligence sector, rising government bond yields, and cyberattacks could undermine global financial stability. According to the IMF's analysis, 14 financing transactions in the AI sector involved approximately $300 billion in equity investments and $650 billion in debt financing, backed by commitments representing $1.4 trillion in future revenue.

The IMF emphasized that high debt levels and market liquidity problems could amplify the impact of potential financial shocks. Under the institution's stress scenario, banks representing 22% of global banking assets could see their capital adequacy ratios fall below regulatory minimums, compared with 18% a year earlier.

The IMF also warned that increasing digitalization in the financial sector is heightening cybersecurity risks. It urged governments to bring public debt to sustainable levels, limit financial leverage risks, and strengthen cybersecurity measures to safeguard global financial stability.
