IMF warns of AI-driven job disruption
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that artificial intelligence could trigger a major transformation in the global labor market.
Speaking at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Georgieva compared AI's impact on employment to a slow-moving tsunami. She noted that the technology is taking over routine and repetitive tasks, reducing demand for workers in certain areas, while low-wage jobs are increasing in sectors such as construction.
Georgieva emphasized that artificial intelligence could have significant consequences not only for employment but also for tax revenues and public finances. She urged governments to reassess their education systems and labor market policies. Stressing that it is impossible to predict what the business world will look like in five years, the IMF chief called on countries to closely monitor the transformation and take immediate steps to help workers adapt to changing conditions.
