Mitsui Chemicals weighs major JSR acquisition
Japan's state-backed Japan Investment Corporation (JIC) is reportedly planning to sell semiconductor materials producer JSR to Mitsui Chemicals in a transaction potentially exceeding 1.3 trillion yen ($8.2 billion).
The potential buyer was identified in information released on November 4. Mitsui Chemicals confirmed it was evaluating options including an acquisition but said no decision had been made. JIC acquired JSR for approximately 900 billion yen two years earlier.
The transaction could strengthen Japan's position in photoresists and other materials essential to advanced chip manufacturing. However, its scale relative to Mitsui Chemicals' approximately 800 billion yen market capitalization has raised financing concerns. The company's shares fell around 13% following the report.
