Japan producer inflation slows to 6.8%

Japan's Producer Price Index (PPI) increased 6.8% year over year, below market expectations of 7.6%.

Producer inflation slowed from the previous reading of 7.6%, indicating that the annual pace of growth in production costs has eased.

On a monthly basis, producer prices fell 0.3%, compared with expectations for a 0.5% increase. The decline followed a 0.2% drop in the previous period, suggesting easing producer-level price pressures.

The figures could be relevant to the Bank of Japan's assessment of inflation and interest-rate policy.
