JD.com wins conditional EU deal approval
The European Commission conditionally approved JD.com's $2.5 billion acquisition of German electronics retailer Ceconomy on November 3.
The Chinese e-commerce group aims to complete the transaction by November 12, gaining control of the MediaMarkt and Saturn chains. JD.com committed to market-based intra-group financing and equal access to its logistics services for third-party retailers.
The decision removes a significant regulatory obstacle to JD.com's European expansion. However, the commitments imposed under the EU's foreign subsidies framework highlight tighter scrutiny of Chinese acquisitions and potential competitive advantages arising from state-backed financing.
