The 8 biggest hacks in crypto history

The cryptocurrency market is facing one of its largest cybersecurity crises following a security breach at Binance potentially involving approximately $6.3 billion in assets.

Investigations into the full extent of the incident are ongoing, while around $3 billion in digital assets have reportedly been frozen. Previous major attacks include the theft of $1.46 billion worth of Ethereum from Bybit in February 2025, the $625 million Ronin Network exploit in March 2022, and the $611 million Poly Network hack in August 2021. These incidents have renewed concerns over multibillion-dollar security vulnerabilities across the cryptocurrency industry.

Other major incidents include the $586 million in assets put at risk during the BNB Chain exploit in 2022, the theft of $530 million in cryptocurrency from Coincheck in 2018, and $477 million in unauthorized transfers from FTX wallets in 2022. Mt. Gox reportedly lost approximately $450 million to $500 million worth of Bitcoin between 2011 and 2014, while an incident involving Bitget in September 2026 reportedly affected $350 million to $388 million in assets. In some cases, funds were subsequently recovered or frozen, meaning the total value of affected assets differed from the final financial losses. These developments once again highlight the importance of robust security infrastructure and investor asset protection across cryptocurrency exchanges.
