Malaysia's growth slows to 5.3%

Malaysia reported on October 16 that its economy expanded by 5.3% year over year in the third quarter, according to preliminary official estimates.

Growth slowed from 6% in the second quarter. Services expanded 5.4%, manufacturing increased 7.5%, and construction rose 6%, while mining and quarrying contracted 4.9%. Export-oriented industries supported manufacturing, while data centre projects contributed to construction growth. Final third-quarter GDP figures are scheduled for November 18.

The figures show that Malaysia continues to benefit from global investment in technology and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Semiconductor manufacturing and data centre development remain important growth drivers. However, the slowdown highlights continued sensitivity to external demand and international financing conditions. Malaysia's central bank has maintained its policy rate at 2.75%.
