Microsoft exits UK data center agreement
Microsoft has withdrawn from a data center agreement with British AI infrastructure provider Nscale in Loughton, Essex.
According to reports published on October 18, 2026, the project has faced repeated delays and significant electricity grid connection problems. Grid officials reportedly warned that sufficient power might not become available until the 2030s. Microsoft did not disclose its reason for terminating the agreement.
The development highlights electricity infrastructure as a major constraint on AI data center expansion. Nvidia-backed Nscale said its long-term relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that it is exploring alternative power sources. Delays could increase financing risks and complicate the timely deployment of planned AI computing capacity.
