Microsoft calls for tougher AI oversight
Microsoft President Brad Smith said in an interview published on October 12, 2026, that artificial intelligence systems face fewer safety checks than many everyday products.
He called for independent testing, mandatory incident reports and emergency mechanisms to stop dangerous AI behavior.
Smith's proposals are not yet binding regulations. However, new requirements could increase safety and compliance costs for AI developers. Independent oversight is becoming increasingly important for companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
