IEA calls for urgent diesel reserve release

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has urged member countries to accelerate the release of strategic reserves amid tightening global diesel supplies.

Speaking ahead of the agency's October 15 governing board meeting, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said countries that had not yet fulfilled their commitments under the March agreement should prioritize diesel supplies. Birol also called on countries that had already met their obligations to consider releasing additional reserves.

Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and attacks on Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure have heightened concerns over global fuel supplies. G7 countries previously agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of oil and diesel from emergency reserves to combat rising prices. Meanwhile, the IEA's 32 member countries approved the release of 400 million barrels from strategic reserves in March, marking the largest coordinated stock release in the agency's history. The latest appeal aims to ease supply pressures in the diesel market and limit further increases in energy prices.
