Oil shipping costs hit record high
Tanker charter rates in the global oil shipping market have surged to record levels.
The cost of transporting oil from the United States to China aboard a supertanker has reached $80 million per voyage, surpassing the approximately $74 million launch price of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. Shipping costs per barrel have also jumped from $4.50 last year to $41.
The record increase has been driven by security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and tightening global tanker availability. Longer shipping routes and ship-to-ship oil transfers have reduced available tanker capacity while pushing transportation costs higher. Rising freight rates could squeeze refinery profit margins and place additional upward pressure on global fuel prices.
