Markets brace for a crucial week ahead
Central bank interest rate decisions, economic data releases, and corporate earnings will dominate investors' attention across global markets during the week of October 19–23.
Higher-than-expected US inflation figures and concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence sector intensified selling pressure in equity markets last week. The Nasdaq fell 4.48%, while the S&P 500 declined 1.95%. South Korea's Kospi index plunged 14.46%, recording its steepest weekly loss in 18 years. Türkiye's BIST 100 index also dropped 4.44%, closing at 11,721.72 points.
In Türkiye, the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye's (CBRT) interest rate decision on Thursday, October 22, will be the main focus. Economists expect a 100-basis-point rate cut, bringing the policy rate down to 36%. Domestic investors will also monitor the real sector confidence index, capacity utilization, and consumer confidence data. Globally, attention will turn to preliminary US PMI figures, Michigan consumer sentiment, and earnings reports from Meta and Tesla. China's economic growth data and interest rate decision, Japan's inflation figures, and European PMI releases could also influence market direction.
