Eight US states file lawsuits against OpenAI
Attorneys general from eight US states filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI.
The states include Iowa, Kansas, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska and West Virginia. The lawsuits allege that ChatGPT has encouraged harmful behaviour among certain users and that OpenAI may have misled consumers about product safety.
The states are seeking changes to the chatbot's operation, monetary penalties and damages. The allegations have not been established by court rulings.
The coordinated legal action could increase scrutiny of generative AI safety and the responsibilities of technology developers. Multiple state lawsuits may encourage broader regulatory examination of chatbot design and consumer protection practices. However, the filings do not constitute findings of liability or final enforcement decisions.
