Sterling reaches 17-month high against euro

The British pound climbed to its highest level against the euro in 17 months on October 19 as political and social unrest in France weighed on the single currency.

The euro fell to 83.95 pence, its weakest level against sterling since May 2025. Sterling gained 0.25% against the euro but declined 0.05% against the US dollar to $1.3327.

Stronger-than-expected UK economic data and reduced concerns about Britain's fiscal outlook supported the pound. However, uncertainty surrounding the Bank of England's monetary policy remains. Analysts see the upcoming October 28 UK budget as an important potential driver of sterling's direction.
