Trump announces Japan's $21 billion chip investment

US President Donald Trump announced that Japan will invest up to $21 billion in two new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New York State.

The plants, which will be operated by GlobalFoundries, are expected to expand US chip production capacity. Trump said the investment would create 27,000 jobs in construction and supply chains, along with more than 1,000 jobs in advanced technology manufacturing. Approximately $10 billion is planned for the project's initial phase, with the first facility expected to begin production in 2029.

The investment will be financed by Japan under a trade agreement between the United States and Japan. As part of the agreement, the US government's stake in GlobalFoundries is expected to increase to 7%, while the US Department of Commerce will allocate $955 million to silicon photonics and advanced chip packaging technologies. The facilities, whose initial customers include Apple and Renesas Electronics, are intended to strengthen the US semiconductor supply chain.
