Trump suspends sanctions on Russia

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the implementation of new economic sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia.

Trump cited US national interests as the reason for the decision, which came shortly before legislation he signed on September 18 was due to take effect. The measures would have imposed sanctions on the Russian government and companies, along with additional tariffs of 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas and 500% on products imported from Russia.

The White House announced that Congress had been notified of the waiver suspending enforcement of the sanctions. The decision notably followed a diesel supply agreement between the Trump administration and Russia aimed at lowering global fuel prices. The suspended sanctions could be reinstated if the US administration deems it necessary. The measures are also significant for countries that import energy from Russia, including China, India, and Türkiye.
