Trump revises 50% tariffs on Canadian imports

US President Donald Trump approved a new measure modifying the scope of additional 50% tariffs imposed on certain imports from Canada.

According to a White House statement, plywood panels, certain paper products, machinery and refrigeration equipment, and selected packaging products will be exempt from the additional tariffs starting October 30, 2026. Meanwhile, certain valves, carpets, and waste products will become subject to the 50% tariffs.

The Trump administration introduced additional 50% tariffs on various Canadian products in July, alleging discriminatory trade practices against the United States, and expanded the trade restrictions in September. The latest changes were implemented under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. Meanwhile, a US-based importer filed a lawsuit this week challenging the legality of the tariffs. The new decision comes amid ongoing trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
