Ukrainian drones strike Russia's largest data centre

Ukrainian drones struck a major data centre operated by Sberbank in Balakovo, Russia's Saratov region, the company confirmed on October 14.

Sberbank First Deputy CEO Alexander Vedyakhin said the facility had been targeted but that all banking systems and services continued operating normally. The approximately 55,000-square-metre site is expected to house a major supercomputer scheduled to become operational in 2027.

The attack highlights the increasing vulnerability of digital infrastructure during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Sberbank and Yandex are among Russia's leading artificial intelligence developers. Three additional attacks on Yandex data centres over the past week have raised concerns about the security of the country's computing infrastructure.

However, Sberbank reported no operational disruption, and potential damage to supercomputing equipment has not been confirmed.
