Williams sees no need for rate hikes in 2027
New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said another interest rate hike before the end of 2026 could be appropriate, but he does not expect additional increases to be necessary in 2027.
Williams stated that the current economic outlook does not justify multiple rate hikes, emphasizing that monetary policy should be calibrated to maintain economic stability.
Williams expects inflation to move closer to the Fed's 2% target next year as the effects of tariffs and rising energy prices fade. However, some Fed officials argue that further rate hikes are needed to bring inflation under control. Following Williams' remarks, US Treasury yields edged lower, while futures markets continued to price in a total of two rate hikes across December and 2027.
